4. Policy Specifics
The University of Florida recognizes the importance of a global presence and supports out-of-country opportunities when feasible. In an effort to manage the university’s risk, up-to and including criminal liability for both the employee and the institution, all University of Florida employees must work from their University of Florida office location or their approved alternate work location within the United States, unless previously approved by UFHR and UF Research for an out-of-country research or teaching assignment.
For the University to legally pay employees located outside of the U.S., the University is required to register presence in that country or find another legal way to pay an employee working from another country. Below are the available options to legally employ abroad for the University.
Options to Legally Employ Abroad
- Establish in-country presence approved by the Board of Trustees.
- Working with UF Procurement and UFHR, partner with an in-country university or college to hire the employee on the University’s behalf.
- Contract with an UF approved 3rd party vendor that has registered presence, such as a staffing agency.
Faculty, staff and students from countries that are comprehensively sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) may be exempt from employment outside of the U.S.
